Periodontal disease is usually painless and patients seldom experience obvious symptoms or discomfort. This is one of the reasons so many people have undiagnosed periodontitis. Periodontal disease usually begins as a mild inflammation (gingivitis) caused by plaque and toxin releasing bacteria. With time, plaque and bacteria will further accumulate, spread and grow below the gum line. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. The toxins stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turns on itself and the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed (periodontitis). The most important factor of this disease is that periodontitis is PREVENTABLE and TREATABLE! -
